The Story Behind the Day
Emirati Women's Day was launched in 2015 by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, with 28th August marking the anniversary of the General Women's Union, founded in 1975 to advance women's rights through education, leadership and professional development. This year's expansion into a full month reflects a continued focus on supporting and empowering women across the Emirates.
Culture and History
Zayed National Museum's Women of the Nation tour journeys across five permanent galleries to trace women's contributions to society across roughly 8,000 years. From an ancient burial revealing the standing of women thousands of years ago to sadu weaving, falconry and Quran education, the tour runs until 26th September, with English tours on Thursdays and Arabic sessions on Saturdays.
Qasr Al Hosn hosts two curated conversations on 29th August as part of its Under Her Shade series, exploring the paths of Emirati women across AI, marine biodiversity, the arts and traditional handcrafts. Pop-up installations from Emirati women-founded businesses will also run throughout the day.
