Voices of the Community: Asha Sherwood, Abu Dhabi Review Founder & CEO

A front-row seat to Reem Island's transformation, from one of its own.

The ADGM District Voices of the Community – Asha Sherwood
Thirteen years on Al Reem Island, and a front-row seat to its transformation from a handful of high-rises into a fully-fledged neighbourhood. Abu Dhabi Review's founder on the District she chose to call home, and what she is watching evolve next.

You’ve built a career around telling Abu Dhabi’s story. How has living on Al Reem Island shaped your own?

I’ve lived in Abu Dhabi for 13 years and chosen to live on Reem Island the entire time. Over the years, I’ve watched the island evolve from just a few high-rise buildings to a full-blown residential area, complete with housing, schools, and even a beach club for a few years.

The proximity to the city, Al Maryah, and Saadiyat makes it the perfect spot to both build a home and a business. The island offers the right balance of being close to everything, while still providing a peaceful environment to live and work. It’s been a great place to grow alongside a city that I was also new to.

What initially drew you to Al Reem Island – and what makes it your favourite neighbourhood to call home?

I was initially drawn to Al Reem Island because of its location, reasonable rental prices, and views. It’s right on the edge of everything – close enough to the city, and other key areas, but far enough to feel like a bit of a retreat.

The convenience of having everything you need within reach, from shops to schools, really made it stand out. What really makes it my favourite neighbourhood is the sense of community here. Over the years, it’s become more than just a place to live, it feels like its own little city, with more residents and businesses wanting to mark their territory here. Plus, the views of the water and the city skyline make it hard to beat. It’s a neighbourhood that’s constantly evolving, but maintains that quiet, laid-back vibe that makes it feel like home.

What initially drew you to Al Reem Island – and what makes it your favourite neighbourhood to call home?

When it comes to Al Reem Island, there are a few spots I always return to. One of my favourites is a walk (or run) along the promenade at Marina Square – you get an amazing view across the city and it's the perfect spot to catch the stunning Al Maryah Island fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

For food and shopping, both Boutik and Reem Malls are go-tos. I’ve discovered some hidden gems, like Kettle Corner, an Indian café serving delicious street food. Also, Asian Supermarket 1004, which has a fantastic selection of Far Eastern delicacies, including our favourite Japanese ice cream.

The newly opened Reem Mall, which I can see from my apartment, also stands out. With its Snow Park and a wide range of F&B options, it’s a great spot for the whole family. And of course, we love VOX cinema, especially the reclining seats in the last rows for that extra bit of comfort.

    • Hidden gem: Kettle Corner, Indian street food café
    • For F&B finds: Asian Supermarket 1004
    • Family day out: Reem Mall's Snow Park
    • Cinema pick: VOX, last-row reclining seats

What are you most excited to see evolve in the district over the next year or so?

I'm excited to see how the new residential areas develop, bringing vibrant new options to the capital, alongside a fresh mix of activities and retail offerings.

From a business standpoint, the expansion of commercial spaces on the island will offer great opportunities for growing my team and offices here. What I’m particularly looking forward to is the increased connectivity, both through new bridges and roads, linking Reem Island to other parts of Abu Dhabi.

The recent opening of the Umm Yifeenah bridge at the back of Reem Island, connecting it to Salam Street, has already made a noticeable difference, improving access for residents heading to Dubai and beyond.

Personally, I’d also like to see an actual ski slope added to the Snow Abu Dhabi – so that we can practice our skiing and never have to leave the island again!

You’ve worn many hats – from media strategist to podcast host and emcee. How does the pace and culture of Al Reem support that versatility?

I’ve seen the island develop from a quiet oasis to a bustling hub for home, work, and play. However, it’s still a place where you can be as plugged in as you need to be while also having the space to switch off when it’s time to focus.

The island's mix of modern amenities and peaceful spots offers the perfect balance for me – whether I’m brainstorming new ideas, having a meeting, recording a podcast, or preparing for an event.

I can get to events quickly, thanks to its proximity to the city, but I can also step back onto the island and find a bit of quiet when I need to clear my head. The vibe here fosters creativity and productivity, without feeling overwhelming, which makes it ideal for managing the different roles I juggle.
