Summer just found a new home at the museum.
Games Through History, the museum's new children's exhibition, opened its doors on 18 July and is now in full swing, tracing the surprisingly long lineage of board games by placing Chess, Ludo and Carrom alongside genuine artefacts from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. It's a look at how the instinct to play has quietly connected civilisations for thousands of years and with the show running all the way to next April, there's still plenty of time to visit.
Friday Film Nights are also underway, pairing a beloved family film each week with a piece from the museum's own collection, an unexpected combination that finds real overlap between animated storytelling and centuries of art history. Aladdin opened the season, with Wall-E, Ratatouille, Bambi and The Lion King still to come through August.
For visitors who'd rather have the museum explained to them than wander it cold, three free guided tours run every single day: a cultural walkthrough, a look at the year's newest acquisitions, and a storytelling tour that changes theme daily.
Play isn't only for children this summer. Book an Easel puts adults in front of a canvas for an educator-led painting session, while Drawing at the Museum is a more technical, observational session built around the building's architecture. For something further off the beaten path, Art in Scents turns smell into a way of experiencing art, and the Quantum Dome Project drops visitors into a VR journey spanning Imperial Rome, Medieval Baghdad and Mughal India.
For those wanting to see the museum from a different angle entirely, a guided kayak tour or a private electric catamaran cruise both offer a slower, more scenic pass beneath the dome.
Every Saturday, families can drop into a free art-making session included with general admission; past themes have ranged from designing postcards inspired by Paul Klee to threading beaded jewellery modelled on pieces from the collection.
Summer in Abu Dhabi has a way of shrinking the world down to whatever's indoors and air-conditioned and this season, Louvre Abu Dhabi has made a strong case for being that world.
