Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and ADGM Arbitration Centre sign MoU

The UAE Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and the Abu Dhabi Global Market Arbitration Centre (ADGMAC) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on building a strong relationship to promote and advance private dispute resolution in the UAE and across the region. The MoU was signed by Leonora Riesenburg, UAE Branch Chair, on behalf of CIArb and by Linda Fitz-Alan, Registrar and Chief Executive of ADGM Courts, on behalf of ADGMAC.

Both CIArb and ADGMAC actively encourage all forms of dispute resolution that resonate with the needs of parties, including arbitration and mediation. In an era of increased disputes, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with a lack of liquidity facing many individuals and organisations across the world, raising awareness of the options available for dispute resolution is paramount.

Alongside awareness campaigns, CIArb and ADGMAC will develop programmes specifically designed for the benefit of the dispute resolution community, including arbitrators, mediators, in-house and private practice lawyers, members of judicial bodies and aspiring students in the UAE.

Commenting on the partnership, Leonora Riesenburg, UAE Branch Chair, said: “The ADGMAC is a natural partner providing a gateway to the Abu Dhabi Global Market, and will accelerate the CIArb’s mission to connect with the mercantile community and alternative dispute resolution (Adr) professionals, both in the MENA region and globally. We have already carried out initiatives in common to raise awareness of Adr solutions available to service the needs of modern commerce, especially during these difficult times when relations are tested by exceptional market conditions. We are thrilled to cement relations with the exchange of contracts. We look forward to working with the ADGMAC in the joint promotion of alternative dispute resolution, and Education and Training opportunities in the region.”

Linda Fitz-Alan, Registrar and Chief Executive of ADGM Courts, said: “ADGMAC’s collaborative partnership with CIArb comes at a time when there is an unprecedented need for streamlined and cost-effective dispute resolution options available to the community. Companies and individuals are facing extraordinary challenges that require nuanced solutions to help guide them through these uncertain times. ADGMAC’s efforts to enhance public awareness of dispute resolution options are aligned with the education and training that CIArb delivers to those in the legal profession, both regionally and globally. We look forward to working closely with CIArb’s UAE branch for the benefit of the dispute resolution community.”
