Abu Dhabi Sustainable Finance Forum 2023 - COP28 Edition
The 6th Abu Dhabi Sustainable Finance Forum took place on 4 December 2023
ADSFF COP28 Edition, took place on the 4th of December 2023 at the Connect Conference Center (C3), located opposite the “Opportunity Entrance”, Dubai Expo City, celebrates the UAE’s Year of Sustainability as it hosts the 28th edition of the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP28).
The 6th edition of the Abu Dhabi Sustainable Finance Forum (ADSFF) will be held on the COP28 Finance, Trade & Gender Equality thematic day, in partnership with Masdar, as part of its Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week platform.
This special edition focuses on the importance of “Building Green Financial Centres of the Future” the market dynamics of emerging Capitals of Green Capital. It will explore how the global financial sector is increasingly concentrating on implementing systems to unleash the trillions of dollars in private finance needed to unlock critical infrastructure, energy, technology, mobility, and property investments, and help power the transition to net zero.
The event will convene some of the world’s top global banking and investment leaders, influential financial regulators, entrepreneurs, and other business leaders to discuss critical factors for success, and to chart the path to concrete outcomes and actions for progress.
Critical Success Factors
Building Green Financial Markets
With approximately $3.5trillion a year needed to power the transition to net zero, this theme explores critical topics like the evolving relationship between asset allocators and asset managers, the importance of data in reporting, accountability and addressing de-risking, the critical role of regulatory framework and regulations, corporate governance and transparency, public markets and boosting capitals of green capital.
An Economically Just Transition
A just transition seeks to ensure the fair and wide distribution of the many benefits of a green economic transition, including supporting those who stand to lose economically. Topics will focus on evolving frameworks and regulations to accelerate green financial markets in the global south, and the adoption of international standards, building legal certainty, managing debt burdens, and multilateral development bank (MDB) reforms.
Funding Critical Green Innovation
Technology is a catalyst for meaningful change in markets and societies. As scientists, developers, entrepreneurs seek to tackle the spectrum of challenges presented by climate, we ask how investors are participating in funding and scaling these solutions, and what financing instruments and models they are using.
Innovating Carbon Markets
Since the creation of carbon markets and trading with the Kyoto Protocol at COP3 in 1997, the global carbon market has grown to €865bn in 2022. However, markets are fragmented and cover less than a quarter of global emissions. Carbon markets and carbon taxes have been criticised for failing to put a high enough price on carbon to drive significant emission reductions, and carbon offsets for not meeting expectations. With carbon pricing still considered to be one of the best tools to drive emission reductions, we ask our panel of experts how this system can be re-engineered to actually deliver on its promise.
